What to wear in rain and wind
Temperature alone is not enough. The same 12°C can be comfortable with a cardigan on a calm day and chilly on a windy one. Rain changes the outfit completely.
Wind and the feels-like temperature
Wind increases heat loss from the body, so the feels-like temperature in weather apps can be lower than the air temperature. HIRKA decides based on the feels-like value. On windy days:
- Dress one step warmer than the chart. What to wear by temperature
- Add a windproof outer layer: light jacket, trench or coat.
- Neck, collar and hands cool fastest. A scarf or beanie is small but effective.
- HIRKA says stay in for gusts of 65 km/h (40 mph) or more.
Rain: what to choose
| Situation | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Light drizzle, short distance | An umbrella or a hooded jacket is enough. |
| Rain plus wind | A rain jacket instead of an umbrella. Umbrellas flip in wind. |
| Long walk or cycling | Waterproof jacket and quick-drying trousers. Avoid cotton and denim. |
| Downpour of 6 mm per hour or more | HIRKA says stay in. Wait it out if you can. |
Small things that help
- Do not go out with wet hair in cold weather. HIRKA reminds you on rainy evenings.
- Shoes matter on rainy days. Pick waterproof or quick-drying ones and carry spare socks.
- If rain starts after 17:00, put the umbrella in your bag in the morning. HIRKA tells you ahead of time.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear on a windy day?
Dress one step warmer for the same temperature and add a windproof light jacket or trench. Cover your neck.
Umbrella or rain jacket?
For short distances an umbrella is fine. If you walk far, cycle or it is windy, a rain jacket is safer because umbrellas flip in wind.
How much colder does wind make it feel?
It depends on wind speed and humidity. The effect is built into the feels-like temperature, which is what HIRKA uses.
When does HIRKA say stay in?
For thunderstorms, rain of 6 mm per hour or more, gusts of 65 km/h (40 mph) or more, or extreme heat or cold.
