What is "Hırka havası" (cardigan weather)?
"Hırka havası" is a Turkish expression everyone understands: not tank-top weather, not coat weather, a cardigan will do. The HIRKA app turns that feeling into four levels and tells you one sentence a day.
The four levels and their thresholds
| Level | Default threshold (feels like) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Atlet havası (tank-top weather) | 16°C (61°F) and above | Warm. Leave the cardigan at home. |
| Hırka havası (cardigan weather) | 10°C to 16°C (50-61°F) | Cool morning, mild noon. Take a cardigan. |
| Mont havası (coat weather) | Below 10°C (50°F) | Cold and windy. Coat, scarf, beanie. |
| Bugün çıkma (stay in) | Rough weather | Storm, downpour, deep freeze or extreme heat. Stay in if you can. |
The stay-in level is not decided by temperature alone but by any of these: a thunderstorm, very heavy rain (6 mm per hour or more), gusts of 65 km/h (40 mph) or more, or a feels-like temperature of -8°C (18°F) or lower, or 38°C (100°F) or higher.
How the thresholds shift for you
HIRKA uses two thresholds: 10°C between coat and cardigan, 16°C between cardigan and tank-top weather. They move together:
- Cold setting: the "easily chilled" slider in the app. For people who feel the cold, thresholds go up.
- Transport: cycling moves them up about 1.5°C, public transport down about 1°C, driving down about 2°C.
- Feedback: your answers to "how did it feel today?" nudge thresholds toward what you actually feel.
The scale screen shows this openly, for example "Hırka havası, for you 12-18°".
What to wear in cardigan weather
A light jacket, cardigan or sweater over a T-shirt, with long trousers. If the temperature swings during the day, dress in layers: layering guide. For every range, see the what to wear by temperature chart.
Where does the data come from?
Weather data comes from Apple WeatherKit with MET Norway as a fallback. HIRKA interprets feels-like temperature, wind and rain. More about the app on the home page.
