What to wear by temperature

Updated: 13 October 2026

Short answer: T-shirt at 16°C (61°F) and above, a light jacket at 13-15°C (55-59°F), a cardigan or sweater at 10-12°C (50-54°F), a coat at 2-9°C (36-48°F), and a heavy coat with scarf and beanie at 1°C (34°F) and below. Use the feels-like temperature, not the air temperature.

The question before leaving home is always the same: what do I wear today? The chart below uses the default thresholds of the HIRKA app. Values are feels-like temperatures, so wind and humidity are already counted. Use the "feels like" value from your weather app.

Thresholds are HIRKA defaults: 10°C between cardigan and coat, 16°C between cardigan and tank-top weather. How cold you feel is personal, see below.

How the chart shifts for you

The same weather does not feel the same to everyone. HIRKA moves the two thresholds based on three things:

  • Your cold setting: choose "easily chilled" and thresholds go up, so you are advised to dress warmer in the same weather. Choose "hardly ever cold" and they go down.
  • How you get around: cycling shifts thresholds up by about 1.5°C because of wind, public transport down by about 1°C and driving down by about 2°C.
  • Your feedback: answer "a bit cool" or "a bit warm" at the end of the day and HIRKA learns you.

What else to check besides temperature

  • Wind: wind above about 20 km/h (12 mph) makes the same temperature feel colder. What to wear in rain and wind
  • Swing during the day: 9°C in the morning and 18°C at noon needs layers. See layering for changing weather.
  • Rain: if it rains, bring an umbrella or rain jacket whatever the temperature.

HIRKA does this maths for you and answers in one sentence. See the four levels or read how cardigan weather is calculated.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear at 15°C (59°F)?

A light jacket or a thin layer over a shirt is enough. HIRKA calls this range cardigan weather (Hırka havası).

What should I wear at 10°C (50°F)?

A cardigan or sweater with long trousers. Add a windproof layer if it is windy. Under 10°C feels-like, HIRKA switches to coat weather by default.

What should I wear at 20°C (68°F)?

A T-shirt and light trousers. Carry a thin cardigan if you will be out in the evening.

What should I wear at 5°C (41°F)?

A coat over a sweater or thermal top, plus a beanie and thin gloves.

Why use the feels-like temperature?

Wind and humidity change how cold the air feels. A windy 10°C feels noticeably colder than a calm 10°C, so HIRKA decides based on the feels-like value.

HIRKA tells you what to wear. Discover the app or visit support.
