Layering for changing weather

Updated: 13 October 2026

Short answer: If the temperature will swing by about 6°C (10°F) or more during the day, wear three thin layers instead of one thick piece: a base layer that keeps you dry (T-shirt), a mid layer that warms (cardigan or sweater) and an outer layer against wind and rain (jacket or trench).

In many cities the temperature easily changes by 8-10°C in a single day. For a day that is 9°C in the morning, 18°C at noon and 12°C in the evening, no single outfit is right. The answer is layers.

The three-layer rule

  1. Base layer: touches the skin and moves moisture away. A T-shirt, thin long sleeve or tank. Its job is to keep you dry, not warm.
  2. Mid layer: the warm piece. A cardigan, sweater, fleece or thin vest. This is the layer you take off and put on during the day, so it should open easily. It is where HIRKA gets its name.
  3. Outer layer: protects from wind and rain. A light jacket, trench, rain jacket or coat.

Examples for a changing day

Morning to noonWhat to wear
9°C to 18°C (48°F to 64°F)T-shirt plus cardigan. Take it off at noon, put it back on in the evening.
12°C to 20°C (54°F to 68°F)T-shirt plus light jacket. A thin layer in the bag for the evening.
4°C to 12°C (39°F to 54°F)Sweater plus coat. Indoors you are comfortable in the sweater.
14°C with evening rainT-shirt plus cardigan, with a packable rain jacket or umbrella.

Practical tips

  • If you are out all day, dress for the whole day, not the coldest hour, and add pieces you can remove.
  • Wind lowers the feels-like temperature. Do not skip the outer layer on windy days. Rain and wind guide
  • Cotton chills when wet. If rain or sweat is likely, choose a light synthetic base layer.
  • A layer in your bag beats a layer you did not bring. Carrying is easier than being cold.

Frequently asked questions

What is layering?

Wearing several thin pieces you can add or remove as the temperature changes, instead of one thick garment.

What do I wear when the morning is cool and the afternoon warm?

A T-shirt with a cardigan or light jacket. Take the cardigan off at noon, carry it in a bag and put it back on in the evening.

Cardigan or jacket?

A cardigan is enough without wind or rain. With wind or rain add a windproof outer layer.

Which fabrics work best?

Cotton or light synthetics as the base layer, wool or fleece as the mid layer. Cotton stays damp for a long time once it gets wet.
